Mercury

Third draft

This report is about Mercury. It is the closest planet to the sun. It is the hottest planet in the Milky Way. It is called Mercury because of the Roman Messenger God.

Location

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun; it is 58 million kilometers away from the Sun. Its diameter is of 4.878 km. It is between Venus and the Sun.

Orbit around the sun

It takes 88 Earth days to orbit around the sun. It is the fastest moving planet. Its orbit looks like a circle that has been stretched out. It takes 58.7 days for Mercury to rotate the sun.

Surface

Mercury has the biggest crater that is called Caloris Basin. The surface is covered with thousands of craters, scraps and valleys. Its surface is similar to the moon. Mercuryís core is made of rocky crust and rocky mantle.

Temperature

Mercuryís temperature is from Ė 180 to 430 C, its temperature is hotter than an oven during the day and during the night itís cooler than a freezer. This happens because when the sun sets, the temperature drops very quickly since the atmosphere does not help retain the heat. Mercuryís temperature is over 4 times hotter than boiling water.

Days and years

One day on Mercury equals 176 days on Earth. A year on Mercury is less than a day. There are no seasons on Mercury because of the tilt of the axis relative to the planets orbit.

Special Characteristics

Mercury has no satellites.

Gases

Mercuryís atmosphere has hydrogen and helium. Mercury has no oxygen. Mercury has a very thin atmosphere.

Water

There is no water in Mercury.

Conclusion

Mercury canít support life on it because it has no oxygen, no water, no air, the temperature is extremely hot and plants canít grow on its surface so food canít be grown. And without this people canít live.

Temperature

Mercuryís temperature is from Ė 180 to 430 C, its temperature is hotter than an oven during the day and during the night itís cooler than a freezer. Why does this happen?  Mercuryís temperature is over 4 times hotter than boiling water. Mercury has a very thin atmosphere. Could this information be included under another subheading?

Days and years

One day on Mercury equals 176 days on Earth. A year on Mercury is less than a year on Earth. Are there any seasons in Mercury? Why?

Special Characteristics

Mercury has no satellites.

Gases

Mercuryís atmosphere has hydrogen and helium. Mercury has no oxygen.

Water

There is no water in Mercury.

We canít live on Mercury because thereís no water, oxygen and the temperature is too hot and the plants canít grow or breathe. Can you use personal language in a repot? Please check!

Children,

This is a fantastic report. You have included very interesting facts.

You have chose good subheadings and the information that you have included under each subheading is accurate.

Please check your conclusion. Could you include more details and give reason of why Mercury canít support life.
