Mr. David Galante at St. Andrew’s
Presentation for Y11 students and Senior School Community
On November 2nd, 2007, St. Andrew’s Scots School received Mr. David Galante. Our visitor, invited by Prof. Leonardo Paulides on behalf of the Senior School Geography Department, held a testimony on his experience as a survivor from the Holocaust/Shoá.
Mr. Galante, aged 83, not only survived the extermination camps, but also remains the only living survivor in Argentina from the Rhodes’ Greek Jewish community sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau camps during World War II.
A crammed library, full of engrossed students, teachers, members of staff and parents witnessed in complete silence for almost two and a half hours, the story of how this Sephardic community was violently taken apart from a paradisiacal island in the Mediterranean in 1944.
Mr. David Galante’s talk outlined the following remarkable aspects:
· Everyday Community life in Rhodes since the 16th century and how the island was a paradigm of a multicultural society including people from diverse ethnic, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds sharing the same land in a peaceful manner.
· The importance of the island of Rhodes as a cultural centre for Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Jewish communities from the 16th century till 1944. The development of Rabbinic schools of philosophy, religious life, the blooming of artistic and literary traditions and the legacy of the Djudezmo or Ladino language as well as details on his family.
· He later told us how the Axis took control of the island. First, by the Italian fascists, then by the Nazis, who later carried out the deportation and forced relocation of the 1,500 Jews from Cos and Rhodes islands. He described the inhuman conditions of the journey to Auschwitz and how little by little their hope for survival started falling.
· One of the most important moments of his talk was when he described the living conditions in the extermination camps and what kept people alive and hopeful. As regards this issue, one of the most remarkable phrases was that of “One more day in life”, meaning the motto each prisoner took as a way of extending hope and even life itself. He also explained how the camps were liberated by the Red Army and how he later decided to come to Argentina with his surviving brother Moshé.
· The audience, in which the students played an active role, asked our visitor many interesting questions connected mainly to Auschwitz, memory, the past and the role of people’s commitment in human’s rights watch, etc.
· At the end of the meeting, our visitor gave us a copy of his recently published book “Un Día Más de Vida” by Martín Hazán, which he autographed and donated to our library.
· One of the tenderest moments was when students went up to Mr. Galante to hug him or shake hands, giving him thanks for this talk or expressing their appreciation for his presence at school that day. On his part, Mr. Galante was touched by the students’ positive reaction and said he was surprised by our students’ sense of historical awareness and true interest in the topic.
To conclude with, Mr. Galante’s visit to SASS means a historical event in our school’s history for he shared with us his privileged memories on a shameful period in Humankind’s history and provided us with his first hand testimony on his experience. Books cannot tell you about this, Mr. Galante can!

Charla abierta para estudiantes Y11 y la comunidad de Senior School.
El 2 de noviembre de 2007, St. Andrew’s Scots School recibió al Sr. David Galante. Nuestro visitante, invitado por el Prof. Leonardo Paulides en nombre del Departamento de Geografía de Senior School, llevó a cabo una charla y brindó su testimonio acerca de su experiencia como sobreviviente del Holocaust/Shoá.
El Sr. Galante, de 83 años, no sólo ha sobrevivido a los campos de exterminio nazis, sino que además es el único sobreviviente vivo en la Argentina de la comunidad judío- griega de la isla de Rodas enviada a los campos de Auschwitz-Birkenau durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
El salón de la biblioteca, abarrotado por completo de cautivados estudiantes, profesores, miembros del personal y padres, fue testigo en completo silencio, por espacio de más de dos horas y media, de la historia acerca de cómo esta comunidad Sefardita fue violentamente separada de su isla paradisíaca en el Mediterráneo en 1944.
La charla con el Sr. David Galante gravitó en torno a los siguientes aspectos de interés:
· El diario vivir de la comunidad en Rodas desde el siglo XVI y la forma en que la isla era considerada un paradigma de una sociedad multicultural que incluía a gente de los fondos étnicos, religiosos y socioeconómicos diversos que compartían la misma tierra en una manera pacífica.
· La importancia de la isla de Rodas como centro cultural para las comunidades judías del Mediterráneo y de Oriente Medio desde el siglo XVI hasta 1944. El desarrollo de escuelas rabínicas de filosofía, la vida religiosa, el florecimiento de tradiciones artísticas y literarias y el legado del Djudezmo o Ladino y detalles de su familia.
· Más adelante, nos dio detalles de cómo los países del Eje tomaron el control de la isla. Primero, los fascistas italianos; luego, los nazis, que realizaron la deportación y la reubicación forzada de los 1.500 judíos de las islas de Cos y de Rodas. Luego describió las inhumanas condiciones del viaje a Auschwitz y cómo poco a poco la esperanza de sobrevivir comenzó a declinar.
· Uno de los momentos más importantes de su charla fue cuando expuso las condiciones de vida en los campos de exterminio y habló de aquello que mantuvo a la gente con esperanza o simplemente viva. En cuanto a dicha parte del relato, una de las frases más notables fue la de "un día más de vida": ése era el lema que cada prisionero adoptó como instrumento para extender la esperanza o la vida misma. Además, explicó cómo fueron liberados los campos por el Ejército Rojo y cómo decidió venir a la Argentina con Moshé, su hermano sobreviviente.
· El público, dentro del cual los estudiantes desempeñaron un rol activo, realizó a nuestro visitante muchas preguntas interesantes conectadas principalmente con Auschwitz, la memoria, el pasado y el papel del compromiso de la gente en la salvaguarda de los derechos humanos, etc.
· Hacia el final de la reunión, nuestro visitante nos dio una copia de su libro recientemente publicado, "Un Día Más de Vida", que dedicó personalmente y donó a nuestra biblioteca.
· Uno de los momentos más enternecedores fue cuando los estudiantes se acercaron al Sr. Galante para abrazarlo o estrechar sus manos en señal de agradecimiento por la charla o para expresar su gratitud por su presencia en la escuela. Por su parte, Galante se conmovió por la reacción positiva de los estudiantes y se manifestó sorprendido por el conocimiento histórico y el interés verdadero en el tema.
Por último, la visita del Sr. Galante a SASS significa un acontecimiento histórico en la historia de nuestra escuela, ya que él compartió con nosotros sus privilegiadas memorias en un período vergonzoso en la historia de la Humanidad y nos proveyó de un testimonio de primera mano sobre su experiencia. ¡Los libros no pueden decirle mucho sobre esto; el Sr. Galante, sí!
