When we act on an impulse we do the first thing that comes into our head. We don’t think about the consequences.
We want to help the children identify impulsive behavior and help them to calm down; think about their feelings and guide them to solve the problem in a positive way.
Feelings such as anger or sadness are ok, but some behaviours related to them are not.
Steps to calm down and gain control:
- Identify signals form our bodies (heart beating fast, feeling hot).
- Calming down techniques (take three deep breaths, count backwards slowly, talk to yourself, think calming and positive thoughts).
- Talk about how you feel, what the problem is, reflect and respond in a socially correct manner.
The children role played different situations where they acted both in an impulsive and reflexive way.
