Public Speaking Workshop
An introduction to the Debate Club

The Art of Public Speaking.

Last Tuesday, St. Andrew’s hosted a highly successful public speaking workshop. The morning was led by two guest speakers: Mr. Can Okar and Ms. Eve Hibbert-Keene from the University of Oxford. The ESU (English Speaking Union) invited students and teachers from many bilingual schools in Buenos Aires to participate in this exciting event. St. Andrew’s was represented by Isabella Di Tella (Year 12) and Stephanie Place (Year 11) as well as a number of teachers.

The workshop included specific techniques on how to structure and deliver a speech as well as the opportunity to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the techniques of a number of different public speakers.

Everyone present benefitted from this informative and interesting experience. Public speaking is a tool that the majority of people use in their daily life. Thus, it is fundamental that everyone has the opportunity to develop a good argumentative style that will enable them to speak convincingly and persuasively, and to deliver their message confidently in front of a large audience or to debate with friends.

The St. Andrew’s Debate Club aims to promote and develop these skills. Students who participate in the weekly meeting will develop critical thinking skills, and consider the techniques needed to deliver these ideas confidently in every situation.

Debate Club is held in H1 at DEC time, from 3.30 pm on Wednesdays for Senior School and on Tuesdays for Middle School.

Students in Years 11 and 12 are reminded they can also sign up for the Public Speaking Competition run by the ESU which will take place at the British Embassy on the 28th of April. The two best speakers will win the opportunity to participate in the final in the UK
