Sustainability

As an educational institution with a long history, we have had to educate in challenging historical moments for various reasons. But perhaps today, more than ever, our times challenge us to realign our purpose with the commitment to building a better future for future generations. In a scenario of unprecedented climate crisis, we recognize ourselves as especially responsible in the task of offering our students the conceptual and socio-affective tools, along with the values necessary to face these challenges.
Therefore, although we have been carrying out various specific initiatives in different sectors for several years, 2022 has marked an unprecedented milestone on our path towards sustainability.
This milestone is materialized in our pledge, a Commitment to Education for Sustainability that we share with the entire Comunidad Ampliada San Andrés.

With the support of the UNESCO - Education for Sustainability and Global Citizenship at the University of San Andrés, we are trained to value and coordinate pre-existing initiatives and design new ones, aligning them more efficiently in our organizational life with a jointly constructed vision about why we embark on this path.
A careful reading of the commitments expressed in our pledge reveals these dimensions, realizing that we understand that they are closely interrelated and that we need to continue working on that interdependence.
We celebrate the momentum achieved by the different levels of SASS leadership, which provided their support through strategic management highly committed to this process of mainstreaming of sustainability in our beloved school.
They are:

Teaching and learning

Sustainable management of support areas
Ellas son:

The mobilization of the participation of all actors

The strategic management of the entire organization
We know that this path that has been underway for some time is actually just beginning, and that learning is what gives meaning to our great common task of educating.
A task for which we are moved by the desire “for ours to be a time that is remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life; for the firm resolve to achieve sustainability; for the acceleration in the fight for justice and peace and for the joyful celebration of life.”
(Earth Charter)

SASS embarks on a journey
towards sustainability because...
We are aware of the importance of caring for the bonds among people, the environment and the world we live in, both in the present time and for the future.
We acknowledge our responsibility as a learning community to act as agents of change, educating citizens who commit to social and environmental well-being throughout their whole lives.
We value our history, our place and the transformational impact that we have as a school.
We pledge to:

1/4
Progressively integrate sustainability in our curriculum, weaving it in its narrative and promoting an interdisciplinary perspective in a collaborative work culture...
2/4
Revise and improve practices and processes in order to identify our footprint and take action with environmental efficiency criteria, contemplating diversity and inclusion and social impact, integrating actions from the different areas at school and allocating resources for their accomplishment...
3/4
Foster a culture of communication and participation that allows us to share learning and projects, to engage and inspire our extended community...
4/4
Promote a strategic management that supports integrated work towards the accomplishment of this sustainability pledge...
The campus operates as a living learning space, providing opportunities to carry out projects in which students learn from the environment, and also spend leisure time in abundant green areas, ponds and specific natural spaces where they learn about biodiversity, water and energy management, and the link with the neighborhood and our neighbors in the socio-ecosystem of which we are part.
From the set of areas that make the task of teaching and learning possible in San Andrés, we work as a team to reduce our environmental impact on the campus and enhance our social impact, through work that we radiate through San Fernando en Red and particularly in alliance with the other organizations that make up the San Andrés Expanded Community (CASA).
The campus invites our teachers and students to get involved in its sustainable management, for which our teams constantly work on creating opportunities for student participation. Our Delegates for a Sustainable Community team interacts with the support areas and collaborates in the integration of information about these areas in learning projects, promoting our own initiatives. We also work on the challenge of sharing the values of sustainability with our families, and our neighbors, expanding our reach to the San Andrés Expanded Community.
To make this possible, the various sectors involved in the strategic planning of San Andrés life coordinate efforts to align as a priority with our pedagogical project, which seeks to significantly integrate social initiatives into the institutional view of sustainability. Our educational project seeks to build a culture of care, collaboration and solidarity, not only between people but also with the environment, between diverse groups, communities and beyond: between generations, since we are aware of our legacy.
Our goal is not only to conserve the environment itself, but also to serve as a model for student learning, so that we demonstrate a school philosophy of awareness and care for our natural resources.
Some of these facilities intended for the preservation of the environment may be exploited and managed by specific students, so that they become effective opportunities to learn and transmit the value of caring for the environment.
The new Campus will include abundant green areas, ponds and specific natural spaces where students will be able to spend their leisure time and carry out learning activities.
We share here with you a video made by some of our Y6 students in 2015. They researched and worked to publicize this aspect of the construction of our Campus.
